OUR PROJECT

About us

We are based in Bures, just on the Suffolk and Essex border, in close proximity to BT's Adastral Park, where there are exciting apprenticeship opportunities. We have been using Code Club resources to teach coding using Scratch and Python but it is a big step up moving from Scratch to Python code so we tend to use Trinket, which has some ready-made code prepared. 

What do we want?

We want to develop coding skills with pupils as young as 3 to help develop expert coders as children move up through the school. To do this we want to purchase a set of BeeBot Blue Bots which are easy and fun to use from a young age. In addition to this we would like to buy several Sphero balls which can be programmed and controlled from a tablet. This will engage pupils in programming and get them thinking about robotics. Sphero can also be used a classroom tool to support development of coding and programming skills outside of computing lessons. For example as a pass the bomb type game in mathematics or as an aid to making PSHE sessions more informal. 

Who is this for?

These items will be used to support computing skills and mathematical skills along side speaking and listening development; communication and social skills as well as team work and co-operation. 

Why do we want it?

Beebots are included as part of our computing scheme and we are currently making use of online programming alternatives, the Beebots would support a much more hands, realistic approach to learning programming skills and support the development of a wider range of interpersonal skills that online tools can't offer. 

Sphero would add further depth to the learning that already takes place as part of our computing lessons. However, it would also allow for hands on learning which can't be replaced by online platforms such as Scratch and Python. Furthermore, it would expose children to real technologies and inspire them to engage with these further as their skills progress.

STRETCH TARGET

If we're fortunate enough to raise more than our target, then we would like to purchase two more Sphero SPRKs to allow for children to work with them in smaller groups. Each Sphero is £119.99.
