I'm raising £1025 to buy spy cameras and camera nest boxes to enable our students to observe wildlife in our school forest. This will support and enhance all areas of the curriculum using the latest technology. In addition to using the IT equipment, we are also planning to build a small watch station, to observe wildlife and make the area of the forest as enchanted as possible to develop and enhance our children's imagination, which will impact and raise the profile of both reading and writing. We are currently collecting plastic bottles to make our own Greenhouse and are raising funds through the PTA to buy the timber for the frame and plants to grow. If we are able to create a safe environment for animals to live in, we can capture the experience and wildlife in their natural habitats.
Our students come from a diverse background including many of our students with English as a second language and a high proportion of special needs (two of which are in wheelchairs). This facility, with the use of the cameras, will enable all students that may not be able to access this area as easily, to also explore and study wildlife in our forest.
One of the things that attracted me to start working at Fairway, was the fantastic environment in which the school was set in (considering we are surrounded by main motorways, A roads and the centre of London just being a few miles away).
We are very privileged to have a small forest on our site, but unfortunately there is not sufficient funds to maintain this invaluable area, which will most certainly enhance and support many areas of the curriculum. The staff, children and parents all help as much as they can with general tidying and gardening, when they can, but it is not only time we need!!!
We have plans to develop the forest into different areas, to promote and provide many learning opportunities such as; creating more habitats to attract more wildlife, pond dipping, an enchanted woodland (to develop imagination and enhance the English curriculum), spy huts and most importantly..........paths for our children with more physical needs to access this area safely.
We are also currently building an eco-greenhouse out of plastic bottles and raised some money to build the frame for this exciting project. But we need more!! The nest boxes will be perfect for watching live footage of the birds in our forest. The cameras will allow us to capture footage the children would otherwise not be able to access.
