Chase Bridge Primary School is a three form entry community school based in Twickenham, London. At Chase Bridge we set high standards of academic and behavioural standards. We expect all members of the school community – children, staff, parents and governors – to work together to maintain these standards and for children to work purposefully towards achieving their best at all times. There is a clear vision and set of aims that underpin everything we do: this is for all children to excel at learning, be able to express their talents and know how to care for others.
What do we want?
We want to be problem solvers!
Coding is being talked about a lot recently and it's a subject within ICT that has been included in the primary school curriculum for several years. Although there are many online coding resources such as Scratch (which we do use at Chase Bridge), being able to teach coding to children 'off screen' provides them with the best foundation to the fundamentals of coding. Bee-Bots and Pro-Bots are tactile resources which provide the children with real world problems to solve. This 'hands-on' experience of coding allows the children to write a computer program by first having to think about the problem they are trying to solve, break it down and write a series of instructions for the Bee-Bot/Pro-Bot to follow.
We want to be super spelling bees!
Spelling Shed is a web and mobile app which focuses on spelling and literacy. The app has been designed by a team of primary school teachers together with primary school pupils which means the app has been created with the key UK National Curriculum objectives in mind.
Our pupils will be able to learn to spell all the words required by the English national curriculum for Years 1-6 using fun and engaging spelling games. Our teachers will be able to set challenges, create bespoke spelling lists and be able to track their pupils' progress.
Also, the app has been developed to be ‘dyslexia friendly’ using the ‘Open Dyslexic’ font which will be of great benefit to our dyslexic pupils. Spelling Shed has come highly recommended by other UK primary educators and we are hopeful that it will become an invaluable resource for our children who struggle with spelling and literacy, and to help all our children become awesome spelling bees!
Who is this for?
The Bee-Bots will be used by all our children from nursery to Year 6. The advanced coding Pro-Bots will be used by our junior pupils.
Spelling Shed will be used by pupils in Years 1 to 6.
Why do we want it?
Bee-Bots and Pro-Bots will provide a more tactile approach to introduce coding to our children. Being able to create simple coding programs requires good problem-solving skills. By mastering this, the children can apply these skills to lots of subjects and everyday life.
Spelling Shed - Spelling is one of the essential components of successful writing. Being confident at spelling leads to confidence in all aspects of literacy. Teaching spelling through 'game play' is one approach to building spelling confidence in young learners.
