BRING CODING TO LIFE WITH PHYSICAL COMPUTING

About us

We are a lovely secondary school in Northamptonshire with a passionate and hardworking Computing department. We really want more students to opt for Computer Science at GCSE and A level as we firmly believe that it is a subject that will teach fantastic, usable skills for life after school. We want our students to be part of the digital revolution which is happening all around us and become the next cyber security experts, software inventors, problem solvers etc.

We want to promote Computer Science to both girls and boys and engage them in a practical way through the use of physical computing using robots. Girls in particular love a 'hands-on' approach where they can see how coding would be used in the real world.

We really want to purchase at least one Edbot (although more would be amazing) as students could then program him (or her) to move, walk, talk, dance, race through mazes - the ideas are endless. The Edbot can be programmed using text-based languages such as Python, Javascript and C# which allows it to be used by students of all ages and abilities across the year groups. This could also be used in other subjects such as Physics and Design & Technology.  

What do we want?

Pre-assembled Edbot with distance sensor.

Edbot is a humanoid robot programmed using Scratch, Python, Javascript, plus many other languages. Edbot runs on Windows, Raspberry Pi, and Mac. The software includes speech support and an innovative motion capture function for users to create their own movements.

Based on the best-selling Robotis Mini, Edbot is inspiring kids to learn coding in schools and code clubs all over the world.

Designed for classroom use, teaching resources are provided. To ensure that all students are engaged equally, the software also includes a unique multi-user function that allows teachers to assign control of Edbot to any PC on the network. The opportunity to take charge of Edbot using their own code provides everyone in the class with the incentive to complete code-writing tasks. 

The same function allows different coding languages to be used simultaneously. Switching between Scratch and Python, for example, is as easy as switching from one user to another. This allows for side-by-side lessons for advancing students.

Who is this for?

This will be used in lessons and coding club across all Key Stages with students aged 11-18. We would also like to include our Primary students using the Scratch programming environment. It would be a great introduction to coding and ignite their interest for when they join us in Year 7.

Why do we want it?

The Edbot would bring a whole new feel to the science of coding; for students to be able to see how their code can actually, physically, make something happen would be such a fantastic experience for them. The robot is particularly engaging and has the capacity to be used by a range of ages and abilities. At the moment, it seems to be used primarily for Scratch with younger students; we would very much like to use the text-based interfaces to engage our students and develop their skills. We firmly believe that Computer Science is a subject that every student should be allowed to study and by making it fun and bringing it to life, we can spark that interest.

STRETCH TARGET

If we're fortunate enough to raise more than our target, then we would like to invest in more Edbots so that we are not limited to 1 for the whole school. That would therefore allow more students at a time to test out their programs and develop their problem solving and analytical skills.
