OUR PROJECT

About us

We are a happy, hard-working community school in the village of Old Kilpatrick, not too far from Glasgow. We are right on the banks of the River Clyde and have a wonderful, supportive team of staff and parents who work very hard to ensure our young learners get the best education.

For some time now we have been developing our digital literacy curriculum through the use of our class Chromebooks (two full class sets shared by the whole school) and Scratch. A particular focus of ours at the moment is coding and programming. We have worked with Barefoot Computing and been lucky enough to receive a grant from the EDINA Fund which allowed us to purchase a class set of LEGO WeDo kits which the children absolutely love.

What do we want?

Upon seeing how engaged the children are in coding, we are now aiming to expand our resources by purchasing 10 Sphero Mini robots that the children can code via the Chromebooks. This would provide the learners a further opportunity to apply their coding skills as well as develop their skills for learning, life and work; creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and communication.

Who is this for?

This set would initially be for the Primary 5 children (class of 30) to develop and improve their coding skills but once they have a good understanding of how to use the resource, they would become 'Digital Leaders' and teach their peers how to use them.

Why do we want it?

Coding and programming have become such an integral part of today's society that developing skills for digital literacy has become the duty of schools in order to fully prepare our learners for life and work in the 21st century. We aim to give our children every possible opportunity to apply their skills to a variety of contexts in order for them to build a strong, meaningful understanding of how technology works and how it positively impacts their life. We believe that interaction with the Sphero Minis will very much help us achieve that vision!

If we're fortunate enough to raise more than our target, then we would also like to buy more Sphero Minis to get us as close as possible to a class set (one between two for a class of 30 pupils).
