OUR PROJECT

About us

We are a large comprehensive school in Northwest Leeds. Our diverse community truly reflects the cosmopolitan nature of our city. 34% of our students come from disadvantaged backgrounds and 44% of our students have English as an additional language. Many of our students join us with a reading age below their chronological age and we work very hard to secure improvement. We are always looking for ways to close attainment gaps and to celebrate every aspect of great learning with our students.

What do we want?

We have been working really hard on our WORDS project to promote reading for pleasure. We now want to buy some resources for our library to enhance our students' experiences whilst visiting the library. Our aim is to develop the library as an inspirational space to encourage more and more students to engage actively in reading.

Who is this for?

Every student in our school will benefit from our project. Our library is used by hundreds of students across the week for browsing, reading, completing home learning, attending book groups, having lessons, and relaxing. These new resources will help Mrs South to make the library a more welcoming place - she is passionate about encouraging everyone to read and this will support her mission!

Why do we want it?

We want to make every Lawnswood student a reader. Our WORDS strategy is having measurable impact in improving reading ages across our school and we are looking for ways to develop this further. We know just how important this is for our students:

"Reading for pleasure is more important for children's cognitive development than their parents' level of education and is a more powerful factor in life achievement than socio-economic background." (https://readingagency.org.uk/about/impact/002-reading-facts-1/).

We want all of our students to be able to access the information that they need, whether this be in books or magazines, on the internet, on external examination papers, or elsewhere. By making our library a warm, welcoming, inspirational place we aim to support the move towards more independence in reading. We want to encourage our students to browse, choose books and read.

We know that reading does not just impact on educational outcomes; we know that reading for pleasure improves mental health:

"Studies have shown that those who read for pleasure have higher levels of self-esteem and a greater ability to cope with difficult situations. Reading for pleasure was also associated with better sleeping patterns." (https://readingagency.org.uk/about/impact/002-reading-facts-1/)

We aim to make Lawnswood students readers for life!
