OUR PROJECT

About us

We are Mossbourne Riverside Academy, which forms part of the Mossbourne Federation of schools. We are localised in Hackney, London, next door to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

What do we want?

We want to acquire additional Sphero 'rolling robots' to inspire our children in the STEAM subjects and to support a creative experience in class. The project will form part of our enrichment curriculum which is in place to provide quality extra curricular activities to help spark and ignite an interest in STEAM occupations. In order to do this we are raising money to acquire additional Sphero programmable toys. The response in lessons to the Sphero is very good and our pupils persevere and work well together to solve problems in order to control the Sphero to perform lesson objectives.

Our children have had a taste of it during maths and coding lessons, but due to us currently only having the one, it would be fantastic to be able to teach with a class set. We feel that through physical programming, we are able to prepare our children for careers in the STEAM subjects and teach them the skills and concepts that will support their progression into later life.

Who is this for?

The devices will be used in our code club as well as our Year 2 and 3 classrooms.

Why do we want it?

Our students have a passion and great love for learning. Based in a school that embraces technology the way we do, we believe that it opens the doors to our children's futures, preparing them for jobs that have most likely not been invented yet. Our children enjoy the challenges of computer science and have the opportunity to code a variety of programmes using scratch online.

The first time we introduced them to the Sphero was a mind-blowing experience. It was the first time that they could apply the coding language that they had learnt to make an object physically respond. We decided that this was too good a learning opportunity to pass and this is why we are in the process of trying to acquire additional devices so that we can utilise them more in our lessons and hopefully inspire a future generation.

STRETCH TARGET

If we're fortunate enough to raise more than our target, then we would like to buy additional Sphero rolling robots.
