We would like VR Tech to help bring Literacy to life!

Key stats

% students on pupil premium: 89%

Number of students this will benefit: 442

Age of students: 2 -11

Summary

We're raising money for Virtual Reality equipment in our school to support and inspire our pupils in their writing! We believe it will have a huge impact on their learning and vocabulary as they will experience countries, historical periods and other places they would otherwise be unable to experience.

My students

Hugh Myddelton pupils are motivated, engaged and inspired in their learning, forever seeking new challenges to tackle head on. This enthusiasm and determination to succeed means they make huge leaps in learning everyday, although this can sometimes be cut short by an inability to experience what they are learning about.

My project

Children write best when they have been able to immerse themselves within an experience as they organically produce the language and vocabulary needed. We tend to approach Literacy through exciting hooks at Hugh Myddelton, such as alien landings, robberies and hand print mysteries!

We would love to be able to inspire our pupils even more by providing first hand experience of things like the Stone Age, coming face-to-face with a dinosaur is sure to make for some thrilling narrative!

It is well researched that children are motivated to learn when they are engaged and bought into a subject which can be achieved by providing a 'wow factor', such as exploring Ancient Rome with their own eyes.

Where your donation goes

We, the pupils and staff, want to buy a set of 6 iPod touches initially and our aim is to then pledge for a further 9 as we feel having one headset between two pupils would be the ideal learning environment. Alongside this we would like a set of 15 VR goggles and 15 Bluetooth controllers to be used in conjunction with the iPods. Our final purchase would be 2 multi USB chargers to enable the devices to be charged safely in a classroom environment.

Firstly, we would use the iPods with the individual groups of children during lessons such as English, Geography and History, where they will have the most impact initially.  The kit can then be used by classes for use across the curriculum and some of the many other features and apps could be utilised by small groups of pupils, which will have a great impact for children who need more support with coming up with vocabulary.

The pupils age from two to eleven years of age and a large majority of them do not speak English as their first language. Additionally, many of the pupils may not have access to experiences outside of their immediate locale and we are located in an area with a high level of deprivation with 89% of children on Pupil Premium. We currently have 442 pupils on roll and so this VR equipment would have an impact for a huge amount of young, eager learners!

As a school , we are expecting there to be an impact in several ways:

  • Pupils will be engaged in their learning and can take complete ownership of it;
  • Pupils will have a greater understanding of the key vocabulary or concepts for a topic or theme
  • Pupils will produce high quality pieces of work as a direct result of experiencing various localities
