OUR PROJECT

About us

Westwood is a happy, thriving community-based school located in the heart of the town of Buckley, Flintshire. We currently have over 240 learners on board, from Nursery to Year 6, with additional provision for Early Entitlement. We are extremely proud of our work as a community school! As a result of the hard work, dedication and commitment from our team of pupils, staff, parents and governors, we are now rated as Excellent and Good throughout all areas of school by Estyn who visited in May 2018 - an amazing achievement!

Westwood has faced and overcome many challenges head on in our quest to be the Buckley school of choice. The success of the school can be noticed and was noted in the recent Estyn report, in our competitive standards, secure pupil progress and enhanced learning environment. Our vast improvements were also formally acknowledged by the Minister of Education for Wales, Mr Huw Lewis when he came to visit us.

What do we want?

We would like to add to our ICT equipment to further enhance the National Curriculum for the children of our school and community. To do this we will need more iPads, desktop monitors and external computer devices (keyboards, mice, printers, VR head sets etc). Westwood Primary closely works with other community groups throughout the year and adding to our ICT equipment will further develop these links

Who is this for?

This is for our whole school, to use across a range of subjects. It will allow the teachers to monitor progress more easily, which will hopefully reduce the workload for teaching staff and will allow the children to become much more independent.

Why do we want it?

As mentioned previously, this improvement of ICT equipment within the school will enrich and further the curriculum. It will provide opportunities for our children that will prepare them for secondary and, furthermore, a life that will be surrounded by digital appliances. Specifically, the children (and staff) will develop their independence of using ICT equipment (such as iPads and VR sets) and increase their understanding of digital citizenship. It will allow teachers to highlight the importance of how to stay safe online whilst using the internet more easily.

VR headsets will be able to place our children in environments that they may never get to see, giving the children a life-changing experience with a click of a button! We have recently been donated several laptops and computer desktop towers (without any monitors, keyboards, mice and power cables) by the construction company Redrow. This was greatly received as the ICT facilities in school needed updating and it has allowed us as a school to offer more digital opportunities to our children.

However, we need more funding to add the extra monitors, power cables, keyboards and mice to the computers towers before the children (and staff) can start to use them.

In addition, it will further develop the strong links that are already in place with the school and local community. It will open up more opportunities for the school to become even more involved with the local community.

STRETCH TARGET

If we're fortunate enough to raise more than our target, then we would also like to buy the VR headsets and the other equipment needed to set up the computer desktop towers.

HELP US REACH OUR TARGET!

Please do donate, even if it is just £1! Every little will make a HUGE difference!

But if you can't donate right now, you can help us in other ways! Share this project with anyone you think would support us. Share the link at the top of the page on Twitter, Facebook, email, your website, blog, mention us in a phone call or even just a chat over the fence! We as a school are trying unbelievably hard to develop digital literacy skills across the curriculum, even more so off the back of a good-excellent inspection report. Please support us and help make a difference to our staff and children.
